Content marketing

Also called content strategy

What is content marketing?

Content marketing is a marketing approach based on creating and distributing useful, relevant content, such as articles, guides, videos, podcasts, tools and research, to attract a defined audience and, over time, turn some of them into customers. Instead of interrupting people with ads, it earns their attention by answering their questions.

SEO and content marketing overlap heavily. SEO decides which topics people search for and how to make pages findable; content marketing decides what to say, in what format, and how to distribute it beyond search, through email, social, communities and partnerships. Content that is useful enough to be shared also tends to earn the backlinks that help it rank.

Why content marketing matters for SEO

Search is one of the largest sources of long-term traffic for content. A guide that ranks for a question people ask every month brings visitors for years after it is published, without paying per click, which is why so much content marketing is built around keyword research.

Content also builds the trust and brand recognition that AI assistants and search engines reflect. Brands that publish clear, original material on a topic tend to be cited and mentioned for that topic.

How to plan content marketing for SEO

  1. Define who you are writing for and what problems they need solved.
  2. Research the questions they search, with volume, difficulty and intent.
  3. Group topics into topic clusters around the subjects you want to be known for.
  4. Prioritise pages that match your product and that you can realistically rank for.
  5. Publish with a clear content brief, then promote, measure and update.

Content marketing FAQ

Is content marketing the same as SEO?

No. SEO is about being found in search; content marketing is about creating content that attracts and keeps an audience through any channel. They work best together.

How long does content marketing take to work?

New content often takes several months to rank, depending on competition and your site’s authority. Results build over time as more pages rank and earn links.
