SEO glossary
What is a SERP?
A SERP, or search engine results page, is the page a search engine shows in response to a query. It mixes organic results, paid ads and special features such as featured snippets, maps, images, videos and AI-generated summaries. Every SERP is built for that query, location, device and language.
Related SEO terms
SERP features are the results on Google’s results page that are not plain blue links, such as AI Overviews, featured snippets, local packs and videos.
A featured snippet is a highlighted extract from a web page shown near the top of Google’s results to answer the query directly, with a link to the source.
People Also Ask is a Google results box of questions related to the search. Each one expands to show a short answer from a web page, with a link.
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results, with links to the web pages they draw on.
Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs’ 0–100 score of the strength of a website’s backlink profile. It is a third-party metric, not used by Google.
SERP checker FAQ
Why are some positions not organic results?
Positions count everything on the page, as Google lays it out. A local pack or People also ask block takes a position, so the first organic result can be number three or four.
Do I need a project?
No. The SEO tools work on their own, in any market you pick. Keywords you find can be saved to a project in one click when you want to track them.
Can I share a result?
Yes. The search, the market and the open tab are all in the page address, so a link or a bookmark opens the same view. Anyone opening it runs the search with their own key; a repeat of something already looked up is served from the cache for free.
