Google core update

Also called broad core update, core algorithm update

What is a Google core update?

A Google core update is a significant, broad change to Google’s core ranking systems, the systems that judge how relevant and useful content is overall. Google releases several each year, announces them on the Search Status Dashboard, and rollouts typically take around two weeks. They are not aimed at any particular site or type of site.

Google explains core updates with an analogy: it is like refreshing a list of the best films. The older films haven’t got worse; newer or previously underrated ones may now deserve a higher place. A drop after a core update doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong with your page, only that Google now judges other pages more useful for those queries.

The March 2024 core update was unusually large and folded the helpful content system into core ranking, so judgements about helpful content now come from the core systems.

Why Google core update matters for SEO

Core updates cause some of the biggest traffic swings in SEO, both up and down. Sites that rely on organic traffic need to recognise them and respond sensibly instead of panicking.

There is no quick fix for a core update drop. Google advises improving content quality overall and notes that recovery, if it comes, often shows at a later core update.

How to respond to a core update

  1. Wait until the rollout is finished before drawing conclusions.
  2. In Search Console, compare a week or more after the update with a similar period before it.
  3. Identify which pages lost the most and look at the pages that now outrank them.
  4. Assess your content honestly against Google’s questions on helpful, people-first content and E-E-A-T.
  5. Improve or consolidate weak pages rather than deleting at random. Avoid quick tweaks made only for search engines.
