Model Context Protocol (MCP)
What is Model Context Protocol?
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI assistants and agents to external tools and data sources. An MCP server exposes a set of tools (for example “get keyword ideas” or “run a site audit”) with descriptions and inputs, and any MCP-compatible client, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or a coding agent, can discover and call them.
Anthropic introduced MCP in November 2024 and, in December 2025, donated it to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation, so it is governed as a vendor-neutral open project. It has been adopted widely across AI products. Before MCP, every assistant needed its own custom integration for every tool; MCP gives them one common way to connect.
For SEO, MCP means an AI assistant can work with real data instead of guessing: pull live search volumes, check rankings, read Search Console data or audit a page, then reason about the results. That is the basis of most AI SEO agents.
Why Model Context Protocol matters for SEO
Language models don’t know today’s search volumes, your rankings or what links point to your site. Connected to an SEO tool over MCP, an assistant can look them up and give answers grounded in data, which turns it from a writer into an analyst.
MCP also matters for cost and control. Many SEO data lookups cost money, and an agent can make a lot of calls quickly. A well-designed MCP server lets you price a call before running it and set a limit on what any call may spend.
How to connect an SEO MCP server
- Create an API key in the SEO tool that provides the MCP server.
- Add the server’s URL and key to your MCP client (for example Claude, Cursor or another agent) following its connection instructions. The OpenSEO MCP docs show the setup for common clients.
- Ask the assistant to list the tools, so you can see what it can do.
- Start with free or dry-run calls to check prices, then set a spending limit per call for paid lookups.
Model Context Protocol FAQ
What is an MCP server?
An MCP server is a program that exposes tools and data to AI assistants using the Model Context Protocol. The assistant connects to it, reads the list of tools and calls them as needed.
Which AI assistants support MCP?
Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Cursor, Visual Studio Code and many coding agents support MCP in some form. Check each client’s documentation for how to add a remote server.
Is MCP safe to use with paid APIs?
It can be, if the server supports cost controls. Look for tools that can quote a price first and refuse calls above a limit you set.

A large language model (LLM) is an AI model trained on huge amounts of text to predict and generate language, such as GPT, Gemini or Claude.
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is when an AI system fetches relevant documents first and then writes its answer from them.
Grounding is tying an AI model’s answer to real, retrievable sources, such as search results, so it is current and can be checked.
