On-page SEO checklist

Also called on-page SEO checklist, SEO checklist, page optimisation checklist

What is an on-page SEO checklist?

An on-page SEO checklist is a repeatable list of checks to run on a page before or after publishing, to make sure its content and HTML give it the best chance to rank and earn clicks. It covers search intent, content quality, title tag, meta description, headings, URL, images, internal links, structured data and indexability.

A checklist doesn’t make a page rank by itself; it catches avoidable mistakes. The most important item, whether the page truly answers the search better than what already ranks, needs judgement rather than a tick box. The rest are quick to verify.

Use it alongside, not instead of, a site-wide SEO audit: the checklist covers one page in depth, the audit covers technical issues across every URL. Each item below links back to the fuller explanation, starting with search intent and the title tag.

Why on-page SEO checklist matters for SEO

Small omissions are common: a missing title, a page left on noindex, images without alt text, no internal links pointing in. A checklist catches them before they cost traffic.

It also makes quality consistent across writers and teams.

  1. Intent: the page type and format match what ranks for the main keyword.
  2. Content: answers the query early, covers key subtopics, adds original value and is accurate.
  3. Title tag: unique, descriptive, main keyword near the start, about 50 to 60 characters.
  4. Meta description: specific summary with a reason to click, about 150 to 160 characters.
  5. Headings: one clear H1, logical H2 and H3 structure.
  6. URL: short, readable slug with hyphens.
  7. Images: compressed, sized, with descriptive alt text and width and height set.
  8. Internal links: linked from relevant pages, and links out to related pages with descriptive anchors.
  9. Structured data: added where a matching rich result exists, and validated.
  10. Indexability: returns 200, no accidental noindex, self-referencing canonical, included in the sitemap.
  11. Mobile and speed: works on a phone and passes Core Web Vitals where possible.
  12. Trust: author, date and sources shown where relevant.
