Readability

Also called reading level, Flesch reading ease

What is readability?

Readability is how easy a piece of text is to read and understand. It depends on sentence length, word choice, paragraph length, structure (headings, lists, tables) and layout (font size, line length, spacing). Formulas such as Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level estimate it from word and sentence length.

Readability scores are rough guides. They can’t tell whether a text is clear, accurate or well organised, and specialist audiences may need technical terms that lower the score. Google has not said that it uses readability scores as a ranking factor.

Why readability matters for SEO

Readability matters for SEO indirectly, through the people reading. A page that is hard to follow loses readers, fails to answer the question and is less likely to be shared or linked. Clear writing also makes it easier for search engines and AI systems to extract a direct answer, for example for a featured snippet.

Most people scan web pages rather than reading every word, so structure (clear headings, short paragraphs, lists) is often more important than any score.

How to improve readability

  1. Put the answer or main point first, then the detail.
  2. Use short sentences and short paragraphs, and one idea per paragraph.
  3. Prefer plain words. Explain technical terms the first time you use them.
  4. Use descriptive headings and a logical heading hierarchy so readers can scan.
  5. Use lists for steps and tables for comparisons.
  6. Read it aloud or ask someone from your audience to read it.

Readability FAQ

Is readability a Google ranking factor?

Google hasn’t said that it uses readability scores. Readable content helps users, which matters for SEO, but chasing a score is not the goal.

What reading level should web content be?

Write for your audience. For general consumer content, aim for plain language most adults can read easily; specialist content can be more technical.
