Title tag length

Also called title length, meta title length, title character limit

What is title tag length?

Title tag length is the length of a page’s <title> element. Google doesn’t set a character limit, but it truncates title links in results to fit the available width, roughly 600 pixels on desktop. In practice that means about 50 to 60 characters before an ellipsis appears, depending on how wide the letters are.

A blue bar is measured by a ruler and cut by scissors to represent title tag length.

Because the limit is in pixels, “WWWWW” takes more room than “iiiii”, and capital letters use more space than lowercase. Mobile layouts can show title links on more than one line, so the visible length differs by device. Google may also rewrite titles that are very long. Words past the cut-off may still be read by Google; they just aren’t shown.

Length is one part of writing a good title tag. A title that fits but is vague will still underperform, so check click-through rate in Search Console after changes rather than relying on a character count alone.

Why title tag length matters for SEO

A truncated title can cut off the part that persuades people to click, or the brand, or make the result look careless.

Very short titles waste space that could describe the page better, while very long ones are more likely to be rewritten.

How to check title tag length

  1. Write the important words first, so truncation only removes less important ones.
  2. Aim for about 50 to 60 characters and check the pixel width in a SERP preview tool.
  3. Trim filler words and drop the brand from the end if space is tight.
  4. Check for titles flagged as too long or too short in a site audit.

Title tag length example

Too long (82 characters): “The Complete Beginner’s Guide to Making Your Own Sourdough Starter at Home in 2026”. Better (45 characters): “How to Make a Sourdough Starter (7-Day Guide)”.

Title tag length FAQ

What is the maximum title tag length for Google?

There is no official maximum. Google truncates displayed titles at roughly 600 pixels on desktop, which is usually 50 to 60 characters.

Is a long title tag bad for SEO?

Not directly, but it may be truncated or rewritten, and stuffing extra keywords into it can look spammy. Keep the essential message within the visible part.
