Transactional intent

Also called transactional keywords, transactional queries, buyer intent, do queries

What is transactional intent?

Transactional intent describes searches made by people ready to complete an action, usually a purchase, booking, sign-up or download. Examples include "buy iphone 16 case", "book dentist appointment", "canva pro discount code" and "download vlc". Google typically shows product and category pages, shopping results, ads and local results.

Transactional keywords often include buy, order, price, deal, coupon, discount, cheap, for sale, near me or a specific product model. Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines group these under "Do" queries, where the user wants to accomplish a goal. They usually have the highest CPCs in a niche and the strongest competition from both ads and organic results.

Why transactional intent matters for SEO

Transactional searches convert best, so they matter most for revenue. Even a small number of rankings on them can be worth more than large volumes of informational traffic.

They need the right kind of page. Google rarely ranks a blog post for "buy hiking boots"; it ranks product and category pages. Getting your product and category pages indexed, fast and well described is the core of ecommerce SEO.

How to target transactional keywords

  1. Map each transactional keyword to a product, category or service page, not a blog post.
  2. Put the product name, key attribute and price clearly on the page and in the title tag.
  3. Add Product structured data so Google can show price, availability and reviews.
  4. Make the action obvious: stock status, delivery, a clear buy or book button.
  5. Keep pages fast and mobile-friendly, since searchers are ready to act and leave if blocked.

Transactional intent example

"Buy oak dining table 6 seater" is transactional. The best target is a category page for six-seater oak tables, filtered and titled to match, with prices, delivery times and product structured data.
