What is article spinning?

Article spinning is the practice of taking an existing article and rewriting it, by swapping words for synonyms, shuffling sentences or running it through software or AI, to produce versions that look new but add nothing. Google’s scraping policy names copying content after modifying it slightly, such as substituting synonyms.

A machine processes one article layout card and outputs a stack of similar but varied cards, showing article spinning.

Spinning used to be done with “spintax” templates that produced hundreds of variants from one article, often for link-building networks. Today the same idea is often done with AI paraphrasing tools. When it is done at volume to manipulate rankings, it is scaled content abuse.

Why article spinning matters for SEO

Spinning promises lots of “unique” content cheaply. Search engines do not care whether the words are different; they care whether the page adds anything. Spun pages add nothing by design, and spun text often reads badly.

The white hat alternative is to write from your own knowledge or research, and to use AI tools, if at all, to help produce something original and checked, as described under AI-generated content.

Risks of article spinning

  • A “Thin content with little or no added value” or “Major spam problems” manual action at scale.
  • Algorithmic demotion by Google’s spam systems, which are built to spot rewritten and mass-produced text.
  • Copyright claims from the original authors.
  • A site full of awkward, unreadable text that loses readers and links.

How to spot spun content

  1. Look for odd synonyms in fixed phrases (“search engine improvement” for “search engine optimisation”).
  2. Compare suspect pages with the top results for the topic; spun pages follow the same structure and points with different wording.
  3. Check content bought from writers or agencies with a plagiarism tool, and ask how it was produced.
  4. Remove or rewrite spun pages with original material, rather than spinning them again.

Article spinning example

Original: “Search engine optimisation helps your website get more visitors.”

Spun: “Web index streamlining assists your site with acquiring more guests.”

Can Google detect spun content?

Google does not publish how, but its spam policies name it and its systems are designed to detect low-value, rewritten and mass-produced pages.
