Bounce rate

Also called GA4 bounce rate

What is bounce rate?

Bounce rate is the percentage of sessions that were not engaged. In Google Analytics 4, it is simply 100% minus engagement rate: a bounce is a session that lasted 10 seconds or less (by default), had no key event and had only one page or screen view.

This is a different definition from Universal Analytics, where a bounce was any single-page session with no further interaction, however long the visitor stayed. Bounce rates in GA4 are therefore usually lower than old Universal Analytics figures for the same site, and you should not compare the two directly.

Why bounce rate matters for SEO

A high bounce rate on an organic landing page can point to a mismatch between what the searcher wanted and what the page offers, a slow page, or an intrusive interstitial. It is a clue, not a verdict: someone who found a phone number in five seconds and called may count as a bounce.

Google has said it does not use Google Analytics data such as bounce rate in ranking. Use it to improve pages for visitors, not as a ranking metric.

How to reduce bounce rate

  1. Check the query behind the page in Search Console and make sure the first screen answers it.
  2. Speed up the page, especially on mobile: look at Core Web Vitals.
  3. Remove or delay pop-ups that cover the content on arrival.
  4. Add clear next steps: related articles, internal links, or a simple call to action.
  5. If quick answers are the point of the page, track a key event such as a phone click instead of judging it by bounce rate.

Bounce rate FAQ

Is bounce rate a Google ranking factor?

No. Google has said it does not use Google Analytics data in ranking. A high bounce rate can be a symptom of a page that does not satisfy searchers, though.

Where is bounce rate in GA4?

It is not in most standard reports by default. Use Customise report to add the Bounce rate metric, or build it into an exploration.
