Brand mentions

Also called brand mention, implied links

What are brand mentions?

Brand mentions are references to your brand, product or company name on other websites, in the news, on forums and social platforms, or in AI-generated answers, whether or not they include a link to your site. A mention with a link is also a backlink; a mention without one is an unlinked mention.

Mentions matter in two ways. On the web, they show that real people and publications talk about you, and an unlinked mention is often an easy link to ask for (see unlinked brand mentions). In AI answers, a mention is the outcome itself: the assistant named you when someone asked for a recommendation.

The two are connected. Large language models learn which brands belong to which topics from how often and in what context those brands appear across the web. A brand that is widely and consistently discussed in reviews, lists and articles about a topic is more likely to be named when an AI is asked about that topic.

Why brand mentions matter for SEO

For AI visibility, mentions on third-party sites may matter as much as your own pages. When an assistant answers “best accounting software for freelancers”, it often draws on comparison articles and community threads. If you aren’t in those, you are unlikely to be in the answer.

Google has not said that unlinked mentions are a ranking factor, so don’t treat them as a substitute for links in classic SEO. Their value there is mainly as link opportunities, brand demand and reputation.

How to track and grow brand mentions

  1. Track mention rate in AI answers for a set of unbranded prompts, and note which competitors are named instead of you.
  2. Find where you are mentioned on the web with a web search for your brand name excluding your own domain, or with a mention-alert tool.
  3. Ask sites with unlinked mentions to add a link, where it helps their readers.
  4. Get into the lists, reviews and comparisons that AI answers cite for your category, through digital PR, product reviews and genuine outreach.
  5. Make sure your brand is described the same way everywhere, so the model associates you with the right category.

Brand mentions FAQ

Are brand mentions a Google ranking factor?

Google has not confirmed that unlinked mentions are used as a ranking signal. Links remain the documented signal, and mentions are best treated as link opportunities and a sign of brand reputation.

Can I buy brand mentions to appear in AI answers?

Paying for undisclosed placements or fake mentions is manipulation. Google’s guidance on its AI features lists inauthentic mentions as a tactic not to use, and paid placements should be clearly marked as sponsored.
