Entity
What is an entity?
An entity, in SEO, is a single, distinct and identifiable thing, such as a person, organisation, place, product, event or concept, that a search engine or AI model can recognise regardless of the words used to name it. “Apple” the company and “apple” the fruit are different entities; “NYC” and “New York City” are the same one.
Search engines store facts about entities and the relationships between them. Google’s Knowledge Graph is the best-known example: it links entities to attributes (founded, headquarters, CEO) and to other entities. This lets Google understand that a query about “the director of Oppenheimer” is about Christopher Nolan, even if the page never uses that phrase.
Language models hold a looser version of the same knowledge, learned from patterns in text. When a model has a clear, consistent picture of your brand as an entity (what you are, what you do, who you serve), it is better able to name you for the right questions.
Why entity matters for SEO
Entities are how search moved from matching strings to understanding meaning. Being a well-defined entity can bring a knowledge panel, better matching for branded and topical queries and more accurate AI descriptions of your business.
Confusion hurts. If your brand name is shared with other things, or your details differ between your site, profiles and directories, search engines and models may mix you up with someone else.
How to strengthen your brand entity
- Describe your organisation clearly and consistently on your site: name, what you do, location, founders, contact details.
- Add Organization (or LocalBusiness) structured data with sameAs links to your official profiles.
- Keep the same name, description and details on your social profiles, Google Business Profile, directories and Wikidata, where appropriate.
- Earn coverage on independent, trusted sites that describe what you do.

What is entity SEO?
Entity SEO is making sure search engines and AI models clearly understand who you are and what your content is about, through consistent information, structured data and coverage on trusted sites.
Is a keyword an entity?
Not necessarily. A keyword is a string of words someone types; an entity is the thing it refers to. Several keywords can point to one entity, and one keyword can point to several.
