Google Autocomplete
What is Google Autocomplete?
Google Autocomplete is the feature that suggests complete search queries as you type in the search box. Google calls these predictions, not suggestions: they reflect real searches people make, including trending ones, adjusted for your language, location and sometimes your past searches. Picking one runs that search.
Predictions are filtered by Google’s Autocomplete policies, which remove, for example, sexually explicit, hateful, violent or dangerous predictions, and some predictions about people that could be harmful. You cannot buy or submit predictions, and trying to manipulate them with automated searches breaks Google’s policies.
Why Google Autocomplete matters for SEO
Autocomplete is one of the best free sources of long-tail keywords and question keywords, in the exact words people use. Typing a seed keyword followed by each letter of the alphabet, or by “how”, “vs” or “for”, reveals many variations.
Predictions also show how people think about a topic, which brands they associate with it, and which modifiers matter, such as “near me”, “price” or a year.
How to find keywords with Google Autocomplete
- Open a private browser window, set to the country you target, and type your seed keyword slowly.
- Note the predictions, then add a space and each letter of the alphabet to see more.
- Try question words before the keyword (how, what, why, can) and modifiers after it (for, vs, near, best).
- Check volume and difficulty for the predictions worth targeting.

Google Autocomplete FAQ
How does Google decide autocomplete predictions?
From real searches, including how often a query is searched and whether it is trending, adjusted for language and location, then filtered by Google’s Autocomplete policies.
Can I remove a Google autocomplete prediction?
You can report a prediction that breaks Google’s policies using the feedback option under the search box. Google removes those that violate its rules.
Related SEO terms
Long-tail keywords are specific, lower-volume search terms. Each brings little traffic, but together they’re easier to rank for and often convert well.
Question keywords are searches phrased as questions, like "how do solar panels work". They often trigger featured snippets and People Also Ask.
Related searches are the query suggestions Google shows on the results page, often at the bottom, to help people refine or broaden their search.
People Also Ask is a Google results box of questions related to the search. Each one expands to show a short answer from a web page, with a link.
Keyword research is finding the search terms your audience uses, then judging which ones are worth targeting by demand, difficulty and intent.
A seed keyword is a short starting term, like "coffee" or "CRM", that you expand into a longer list of keyword ideas during keyword research.
