Google Maps SEO

Also called Google Maps optimisation, Maps SEO, map rankings

What is Google Maps SEO?

Google Maps SEO is the work of improving how visible a business is when people search in Google Maps, for queries such as “coffee shop” or “vet open now”. It overlaps heavily with local pack optimisation, since the same Google Business Profile and the same local ranking factors drive both.

Maps differs slightly from the local pack in search. It shows many more results, is used heavily on phones while people are on the move, and is often viewed as a map where the visible area affects which businesses appear. Filters such as “open now” or “top rated” can also change which businesses show.

Why Google Maps SEO matters

Many people search directly in the Maps app, particularly for places to visit. Ranking well there brings direction requests, calls and walk-in customers that never reach your website.

Because Maps results shift with the map view and the user’s location, it is a place where accurate profile data and strong reviews matter even more than in normal search.

How to rank higher on Google Maps

  1. Complete every relevant section of your profile, starting with the primary category, hours and address or service area.
  2. Keep hours accurate, including special hours. Filters like “open now” rely on them.
  3. Collect genuine reviews regularly and reply to them.
  4. Add photos of the outside, inside and your products or work, so people recognise you.
  5. Make sure your map pin sits exactly on your entrance.
  6. Track rankings with a geo-grid to see how visibility changes across your area.

Google Maps SEO FAQ

Is Google Maps ranking the same as local pack ranking?

How do I get my business on Google Maps?

Create or claim a Google Business Profile and verify it. Once verified, your business can appear in Maps and Search.
