Impressions
What are impressions?
Impressions are the number of times a link to your site appeared in search results that someone viewed. In Google Search Console, an impression is counted when your result is on the page of results the user loaded, whether or not they scrolled down to it, and regardless of whether they clicked.
Search Console counts impressions by property or by page. In the property view, several of your URLs appearing on the same results page usually count as one impression for the site; in the page view, each URL gets its own. That is why page-level totals can add up to more than the site total. Some features, such as carousels, only count an impression once the result is scrolled or expanded into view, and a result on page two only counts if the user goes to page two.
Links to your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode count towards impressions in the web search type. Impressions are also affected by automated traffic: when Google stopped supporting the num=100 parameter in September 2025, many sites saw desktop impressions drop, which most analysts put down to fewer scrapers loading 100 results at a time.
Why impressions matter for SEO
Impressions measure visibility before anyone clicks. Rising impressions with flat clicks usually mean you are ranking for more queries, but lower down or in places that do not earn clicks. Falling impressions across the board point to lost rankings, an indexing problem or a change in how searches are counted.
Impressions are the denominator of click-through rate, so they tell you how big an opportunity a query is. A query with thousands of impressions and a low CTR is worth a better title; one with a dozen impressions is not.
How to analyse impressions in Search Console
- Open the Performance report and turn on Impressions, Clicks and Average position together.
- Sort the Queries table by impressions to find where you are most visible.
- Look for queries with high impressions and an average position between 5 and 20: these are your striking distance keywords.
- Compare date ranges. A sudden step change on one date, especially on desktop, is more likely a counting change or an indexing problem than a slow ranking shift.
- Filter by page to see whether a drop is site-wide or limited to a section.
Impressions FAQ
Does an impression mean someone saw my result?
Not necessarily. For standard results, Search Console counts an impression when your link is on the page the user loaded, even if it was below where they scrolled.
Why did my impressions drop in September 2025?
Around 10 September 2025 Google stopped honouring the num=100 URL parameter that tools used to load 100 results at once. Many sites saw desktop impressions fall and average position improve at the same time. Google has not confirmed the cause, but the common explanation is that scrapers had been inflating impressions for deep rankings.
