Clicks

Also called organic clicks, search clicks

What are clicks?

Clicks are the number of times a user clicked a search result that took them to your site. In Google Search Console, a click is counted when someone clicks a link that leads off Google Search to a page on your property. Clicks that run a new Google search, such as some links inside SERP features, are not counted.

Clicks are the closest thing to organic traffic that Google reports. They are not the same as sessions in GA4: analytics only records a session if its tag loads and the user accepts tracking, and it uses its own time zone and session rules. Expect the two numbers to move together but not to match.

Why clicks matter for SEO

Clicks are the outcome that most SEO work is aimed at. Impressions and rankings only matter if they turn into visits. Tracking clicks by query and landing page tells you which content actually brings people in.

When clicks fall, compare them with impressions and position. Fewer impressions means lost visibility. Steady impressions with fewer clicks means your results are getting less attention, because of a weaker title, a new SERP feature such as an AI Overview, or competitors with richer snippets.

How to find why organic clicks dropped

  1. In the Search Console Performance report, compare the last 28 days with the previous period.
  2. Sort the Queries table by click difference to find the queries that lost most.
  3. For each, check whether impressions or average position also fell. If position fell, look at who now outranks you.
  4. If position held but clicks fell, search the query yourself to see what changed on the page: new ads, an AI Overview, a featured snippet or a video carousel.
  5. Switch to the Pages tab to see whether the loss is concentrated on a few URLs.

Clicks FAQ

Why are Search Console clicks higher than GA4 organic sessions?

Usually because some visitors block or decline analytics, leave before the tag fires, or arrive on pages without the tag. Time zone and attribution differences add to the gap.

Do clicks affect rankings?

Google says it uses interaction data in some systems, but clicks are noisy and easy to fake, so trying to inflate them is spam. See CTR manipulation.
