Keyword ranking
What is keyword ranking?
A keyword ranking is the position at which a web page appears in search results for a specific query. Position 1 is the first organic result. A ranking always belongs to a keyword, a location, a device and a moment, because results differ between cities, between mobile and desktop, and from day to day.
Tools count positions in different ways. Some count only classic organic links; others count every result block, including a featured snippet, People Also Ask or a local pack, so the same listing can be “position 3” in one tool and “position 6” in another. With continuous scrolling, “page one” also means less than it did; positions 1 to 10 is the usual stand-in.
Why keyword ranking matters for SEO
Rankings drive clicks. Results near the top earn far more traffic than results further down, so moving from position 9 to position 3 on a valuable query can multiply its visits. Tracking rankings per keyword tells you which pages are gaining or losing ground before traffic catches up.
Rankings also show which page Google considers the best match for a query. If the URL changes, or two of your pages alternate, you may have keyword cannibalization.
How to check keyword rankings
- For a quick live check, use a SERP checker set to the country or city you care about, rather than searching in your own browser.
- For trends, add the keyword to a rank tracker with a fixed location and device.
- In Search Console, filter the Performance report by the query to see your average position over time across all users.
- Note the ranking URL as well as the number.
Keyword ranking FAQ
How do I check my Google ranking for a keyword?
Use a SERP checker or rank tracker set to your target location, or search in a private window. Personal history and location change what you see, so a tool with a fixed location is more reliable.
How long does it take to rank for a keyword?
It varies widely with competition, your site’s authority and the content. Low-competition terms can rank within weeks; competitive ones often take many months.
