AI citations
What are AI citations?
AI citations are the links an AI assistant or AI search feature shows as the sources for its answer, such as the numbered references in Perplexity, the source links in ChatGPT search or the linked cards in Google’s AI Overviews. A citation means the system retrieved your page and presented it as support for the answer.

A citation is different from a brand mention. An answer can name your brand without linking to you, or link to your page while recommending a competitor. Citations come from retrieval: the assistant ran a search, read pages and chose some to reference. Mentions can also come from training data.
Citations have a position. Most assistants list several sources, and the first ones get the most attention and clicks. Tracking citation position over time is the AI-search equivalent of rank tracking.
Why AI citations matter for SEO
Citations are the main way AI answers send traffic to websites. They are also a signal of trust: if the same assistant keeps citing your page for a topic, you are, in effect, its preferred source.
Studying citations shows you what wins. If AI answers for your key questions cite a comparison article, a Reddit thread and a competitor’s guide, those three pages tell you what format and depth the systems prefer, and where your brand needs to appear.
How to earn more AI citations
- Make the page easy to cite: a direct answer near the top, specific facts, clear headings and a visible date and author.
- Rank for the query and its related sub-queries (query fan-out). Assistants with web search usually pick citations from what a search returns.
- Add something other sources don’t have: original data, a calculator, first-hand testing, expert commentary.
- Keep facts current. Outdated prices or figures make a page less useful as a source.
- Measure citation rate and position for a set of prompts across several assistants, and re-check after you change a page.
AI citations example
For the prompt “how much does a loft conversion cost in the UK”, an assistant cites five sources. Your guide appears in 6 of 10 runs, at an average position of 3. After adding a dated cost table by conversion type and region, it appears in 8 of 10 runs at an average position of 2. That is the kind of change worth tracking.
AI citations FAQ
Do AI citations count as backlinks?
No. A citation in an AI answer is a link shown to the user, not a link on a web page that search engines crawl, so it doesn’t pass PageRank. It can still bring visitors.
Why does an AI cite pages that don’t rank on page one?
Many assistants run several related searches for one question (query fan-out), so a page can be retrieved for a sub-question even if it doesn’t rank for the main query.
