Query fan-out
What is query fan-out?
Query fan-out is a technique where an AI search system breaks one question into several related sub-queries, runs those searches at the same time and combines the results into a single answer. Google describes it as a set of concurrent, related queries generated by the model to request more information, and uses it in AI Mode and AI Overviews.

For example, a question like “best running shoes for flat feet under £100” might fan out into searches about running shoes for flat feet, stability versus neutral shoes, current prices, recent reviews and specific models. Other assistants that search the web, including ChatGPT and Perplexity, often run more than one search per question in a similar way.
Why query fan-out matters for SEO
Fan-out explains why AI answers cite pages that don’t rank for the original query: those pages rank for one of the sub-queries. It rewards sites that cover a topic thoroughly, including the follow-up questions, rather than a single keyword.
It does not mean you should create a page for every possible sub-query. Google’s guidance says that creating many pages for fan-out variations, primarily to manipulate rankings or AI responses, violates its scaled content abuse policy.
How to optimise for query fan-out
- List the sub-questions behind your main topics: comparisons, costs, steps, alternatives, problems. People Also Ask and related searches are good sources.
- Cover them where they belong: within a strong main page, or on separate pages when they deserve their own, linked as a topic cluster.
- Give each section a clear heading and a direct answer, so it can be used on its own.
- Track rankings for the sub-queries too, not only the head term.
Query fan-out FAQ
Can I see the fan-out queries Google uses?
Not directly. Google doesn’t show them, but the sources cited in an AI answer, and People Also Ask and related searches for the query, give a good idea of the subtopics involved.
Should I write a page for every fan-out query?
No. Cover sub-topics where they genuinely help readers. Mass-producing near-identical pages for query variations is scaled content abuse under Google’s spam policies.
