Clickstream data

Also called clickstream, click-stream data, panel data

What is clickstream data?

Clickstream data is a record of the sequence of pages and links a group of internet users visit and click. In SEO, third-party tools use anonymised clickstream data from consenting user panels to estimate search volumes, how many searches lead to a click and how much traffic sites get.

Google does not share exact search counts for every keyword, and its advertising data is grouped and rounded. Panels are typically people using certain browser extensions or apps who agreed to share their browsing. Clickstream data helps tools fill gaps: estimating volume for keywords advertisers ignore, separating close variants, and seeing zero-click searches. It is a sample, though, so it reflects whoever is in the panel and is less reliable for small countries, niche topics and rare queries. Panels can also shrink or close, which is one reason tools revise their estimates over time.

Why clickstream data matters for SEO

Understanding clickstream data explains why SEO tools disagree. Each tool combines different sources, panels and models, so search volume and traffic estimates differ. The numbers are best used to compare keywords and competitors, not as exact counts.

For your own site, first-party data beats any estimate. Google Search Console shows the real impressions and clicks Google recorded for your pages.

Clickstream data example

A panel shows that of everyone in it who searched "time in tokyo", very few clicked a result, because Google answered on the page. A tool using that data can flag the keyword as mostly zero-click even if its volume is high.

Clickstream data FAQ

Is clickstream data accurate?

It is a sample of users, so it is an estimate. It is more reliable for popular keywords in large markets and less so for niche or rare queries.

Is clickstream data legal?

Reputable panels collect it with user consent and anonymise it. Privacy rules such as GDPR apply, and how data is collected varies by provider.
