Zero-click searches
What are zero-click searches?
Zero-click searches are searches where the user does not click through to any website from the results page. The user may get the answer from an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, a calculator, a weather box or a map, refine the query, or simply leave.

Estimates of how many searches end without a click vary widely between studies and methods, and they have been rising as Google adds more answers to the results page. Exact shares are less useful than the trend: for many quick factual queries, ranking first no longer guarantees much traffic.
Why zero-click searches matter for SEO
Zero-click behaviour changes which keywords are worth targeting. A query like “time in Tokyo” or “50 euros to dollars” will rarely send visits however well you rank, while “best family hotels in Tokyo” still does. Factor it in when you estimate traffic potential.
Visibility still has value without the click. Being the source of an answer, a cited link in an AI Overview, or the business in the local pack builds brand awareness and can lead to a branded search, a phone call or a visit later. Measure impressions and brand search, not only clicks.
How to adapt to zero-click searches
- Check the results page before targeting a keyword. If the answer is fully on the page, expect few clicks.
- Prioritise queries that need more than a one-line answer: comparisons, how-tos, research and buying decisions.
- Aim to be the cited source in AI Overviews and featured snippets, so your brand appears even without a click.
- For local businesses, keep your Google Business Profile complete: calls and direction requests are results too.
- Track impressions, branded searches and conversions alongside clicks.
Zero-click searches FAQ
Are zero-click searches bad for SEO?
They reduce clicks on some queries, but they do not make SEO pointless. Focus on queries that need a visit, and treat answer visibility as brand exposure.
Do AI Overviews increase zero-click searches?
They answer more queries directly on the page, which tends to reduce clicks to websites for those queries. The effect varies by query type.
