Google AI Mode

Also called AI Mode

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google Search where a Gemini model answers the query in full, rather than showing a page of ranked links. You can ask follow-up questions, and the answer includes links to the web pages it draws on. It is a separate tab or mode, while AI Overviews appear inside normal results.

Google introduced AI Mode as a Search Labs experiment in March 2025 and launched it to all users in the United States in May 2025. Through 2025 and 2026 it expanded to many more countries and languages; Google’s help pages list where it is available now. It is designed for longer, more complex questions, comparisons and multi-step tasks.

AI Mode relies heavily on query fan-out: it breaks a question into subtopics, runs many related searches at once and combines the results into one answer. As with AI Overviews, Google says no special optimisation is needed: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be shown.

Why Google AI Mode matters for SEO

In AI Mode the answer is the page. There is no list of ten results to rank in, only the sources the model cites. Visibility depends on whether your page is retrieved for any of the fan-out queries and judged useful enough to cite.

Traffic from AI Mode is counted in Search Console’s Performance report under the Web search type, so it is mixed with your other Google traffic. Watching how your cited pages perform, and tracking prompts directly, gives a clearer picture.

How to appear in Google AI Mode

  1. Cover topics in depth, including the follow-up questions people ask, so your pages match the sub-queries AI Mode runs. A topic cluster helps here.
  2. Keep pages indexable and snippet-eligible, and check them with the URL Inspection tool.
  3. Give specific, current facts and clear comparisons; AI Mode is often used for “which should I choose” questions.
  4. Search your important questions in AI Mode yourself and note which sources it cites, then compare those pages with yours.
