SEO ROI
What is SEO ROI?
SEO ROI (return on investment) measures how much value organic search brings in compared with what was spent to get it. The usual formula is (value from organic search − cost of SEO) ÷ cost of SEO × 100. Value is revenue or the estimated value of leads from organic traffic; cost includes staff time, agencies, tools, content and links.

The hard part is the value side. Ecommerce sites can read organic revenue from analytics. Lead-generation sites need a value per lead: the share of leads that become customers multiplied by the average customer value. Attribution matters as well, because many customers find you through search, leave, and come back through another channel.
Why SEO ROI matters for SEO
ROI is how SEO competes with other channels for budget. Paid search stops the day you stop paying; SEO work keeps paying back as long as the pages keep ranking, so ROI tends to grow over time while costs stay flat.
Calculating it also shows where SEO pays most. Comparing ROI for different sections or content types tells you which work to do more of.
How to calculate SEO ROI
- Total the cost of SEO for the period: salaries or time spent, agency fees, tools, content, link building and any other spend.
- Measure organic results: revenue from Organic Search in GA4, or the number of organic key events such as leads.
- For leads, multiply by your lead-to-customer rate and average customer value.
- If you want only the effect of your work, subtract the baseline organic value you had before.
- Apply the formula and look at it over at least 12 months, since SEO returns build slowly.
SEO ROI example
A firm spends $60,000 a year on SEO. Organic search brings 400 leads; 10% become customers worth $3,000 each, so organic value is 400 × 0.10 × $3,000 = $120,000. SEO ROI = ($120,000 − $60,000) ÷ $60,000 × 100 = 100%.
SEO ROI FAQ
How long does SEO take to show ROI?
Often six to twelve months or more, depending on competition and starting point. Returns tend to grow after that, because rankings keep bringing traffic without paying per click.
Can I use traffic value to measure SEO ROI?
As a rough proxy. Traffic value estimates what the clicks would cost as ads; your own revenue and lead data give a truer figure.
