SEO reporting
What is SEO reporting?
SEO reporting is the regular process of collecting search performance data, explaining what changed and why, and recommending what to do next. A typical SEO report covers organic traffic and key events, Search Console clicks and impressions, rankings for priority keywords, technical health, links gained and lost, and the work done in the period.

Data comes from Google Search Console, GA4, a rank tracker, a backlink tool and a site crawler. Dashboards in Looker Studio or another tool keep numbers up to date; the written part, what happened and what you will do about it, is what makes it a report.
Why SEO reporting matters for SEO
Reporting is how SEO earns trust and budget. Because results take months, stakeholders need to see leading indicators moving and understand what is being done. A report that explains a drop before anyone asks is worth more than a page of charts.
It also keeps the team honest. Comparing results against SEO KPIs every month shows which work pays off and which does not.
How to write an SEO report
- Open with a three-line summary: the headline result, the main reason, and the next action.
- Show your KPIs against the previous period and the same period last year, to account for seasonality.
- Explain the biggest movements: which pages, queries or keywords drove them, and any outside cause such as a Google update.
- List the work completed and what it has done so far.
- End with the plan for the next period and any decisions you need from the reader.
- Keep the same structure every time so changes are easy to spot.
