SEO KPIs
What are SEO KPIs?
SEO KPIs (key performance indicators) are the handful of metrics a team chooses to measure whether its SEO is meeting its goals. Common ones are organic clicks or sessions, non-branded impressions, keyword rankings for priority terms, visibility, key events and revenue from organic search, and indexing health.

Good KPIs fall into three layers. Outcome KPIs measure business results: leads, sales, revenue from organic. Performance KPIs measure search results: clicks, CTR, rankings, visibility. Health KPIs measure the site itself: indexed pages, crawl errors, Core Web Vitals. Outcomes matter most; the other two explain why they move.
Why SEO KPIs matter for SEO
SEO is slow and noisy. Without agreed KPIs, every ranking wobble becomes a debate and every report a list of numbers. A few clear KPIs, tied to business goals, tell everyone what success looks like and when to change course.
Separate branded from non-branded search. Branded traffic follows brand awareness, advertising and PR; non-branded traffic is where SEO work shows most clearly.
How to choose SEO KPIs
- Start from the business goal: more leads, more sales, more sign-ups, lower acquisition cost.
- Pick one or two outcome KPIs, such as key events or revenue from organic search.
- Add three or four performance KPIs that lead to them: non-branded clicks, rankings or visibility for priority keywords, CTR on key pages.
- Add one or two health KPIs from Search Console and your site audit.
- Set a baseline from the last 12 months and a realistic target, allowing for seasonality.
- Report them on a fixed schedule, monthly for most teams.
SEO KPIs FAQ
What are the most important SEO KPIs?
Organic key events or revenue, non-branded organic clicks, and rankings or visibility for the keywords that matter to your business. The right set depends on your goals.
Is keyword ranking a good KPI?
As a leading indicator, yes, for a focused set of priority keywords. On its own it is not enough: rankings matter only if they bring clicks and results.
