Zero-volume keywords

Also called zero search volume keywords, ZSV keywords, no volume keywords

What are zero-volume keywords?

Zero-volume keywords are search terms that keyword tools show as having zero or near-zero monthly search volume. Many still get searched. Tools estimate volume from limited data and often round down rare, new or very specific queries, so a keyword marked as zero can bring real visitors, especially from people close to buying.

There are a few reasons for the gap. Volume databases only cover keywords someone has added, and very new searches have no history. Google has said for years that around 15% of the searches it sees each day are new. Advertising data can group close variants under one keyword, leaving the others at zero. And B2B or niche terms may be searched only a handful of times a month, below what tools display.

Why zero-volume keywords matter for SEO

Zero-volume keywords often have little competition and very specific intent. A query like "invoice software for dog groomers" may show zero, yet the few people who search it are ideal customers. Together, many such keywords can add up to meaningful traffic.

They are also a good fit for new sites, product-specific questions and terms your customers use that tools have not caught up with.

How to find zero-volume keywords worth targeting

  1. Check Search Console for queries that show impressions but which tools list as zero.
  2. Mine sales calls, support tickets and forums for specific questions customers ask.
  3. Look at the top 10: if Google shows dedicated, relevant pages, someone is searching.
  4. Check whether the keyword has a broader parent topic; if it does, cover it within that page instead.
  5. Prioritise zero-volume keywords with clear buying intent or a direct link to your product.

Zero-volume keywords example

A scheduling app writes a page on "appointment booking software for piano teachers". Tools show zero volume. Six months later Search Console shows a few hundred impressions a month across dozens of similar queries, and the page has brought several paying customers.
