SEO glossary
What is organic traffic?
Organic traffic is the visits a website gets from people clicking its unpaid listings in search engines such as Google or Bing. It excludes paid ads, social media, email and direct visits. It is the main outcome SEO is measured by, alongside the leads and sales those visits bring.
Related SEO terms
Traffic value estimates what a site’s organic traffic would cost if you bought the same clicks with search ads, using each keyword’s CPC.
Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs’ 0–100 score of the strength of a website’s backlink profile. It is a third-party metric, not used by Google.
Ranking distribution shows how many of a site’s keywords sit in each position band, such as 1–3, 4–10, 11–20 and 21–100.
A referring domain is a website that links to your site at least once. Each domain counts once, no matter how many links it sends.
A keyword gap is the set of keywords your competitors rank for and you don’t. Keyword gap analysis finds them so you can target them.
Domain overview FAQ
How is organic traffic estimated?
From every keyword the domain ranks for: its volume, the position and a typical click-through rate for that position. It is an estimate for comparing sites, not an analytics figure.
Do I need a project?
No. The SEO tools work on their own, in any market you pick. Keywords you find can be saved to a project in one click when you want to track them.
Can I share a result?
Yes. The search, the market and the open tab are all in the page address, so a link or a bookmark opens the same view. Anyone opening it runs the search with their own key; a repeat of something already looked up is served from the cache for free.
