SEO glossary

What is on-page SEO?

On-page SEO is the practice of optimising the content and HTML of individual pages so search engines understand them and searchers choose them. It covers the main text, the title tag, meta description, headings, URL, images and internal links, and how well the page answers the search intent behind its target keyword.

On-page SEO, explained

Related SEO terms

  • Title tag

A title tag is the HTML element that names a page. Google often uses it as the clickable headline in results, so it affects rankings and clicks.

  • Meta description

A meta description is an HTML tag that summarises a page. Google may show it as the snippet under the title; it affects clicks, not rankings.

  • Header tags (H1–H6)

Header tags (H1–H6) are HTML headings that structure a page into sections, helping readers scan and search engines understand the content.

  • URL Rating (UR)

URL Rating (UR) is Ahrefs’ 0–100 score of the strength of one page’s backlink profile, including internal and external links.

  • Backlink

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Search engines treat backlinks as votes of trust and use them to rank and discover pages.

Page analyser FAQ

Do I need a project?

No. The SEO tools work on their own, in any market you pick. Keywords you find can be saved to a project in one click when you want to track them.

Can I share a result?

Yes. The search, the market and the open tab are all in the page address, so a link or a bookmark opens the same view. Anyone opening it runs the search with their own key; a repeat of something already looked up is served from the cache for free.
